For millennia, the Cascade Mountains have stood watch over the Pacific Northwest. Millions of people, attracted by their grandeur, have settled in their shadows. But the slumber of these majestic sentinels is a fitful one and geologists are monitoring their ominous rumblings. Could what they are hearing be a muted warning?

The Cascades are actually a chain of volcanoes part of the infamous Ring of Fire that encircles the Pacific Rim. When Mt. St. Helen's erupted, the Pacific Northwest experienced first hand the staggering power that loomed over them...could it happen again?

Journey with us to the Philippines, Japan and Mexico to discover how other people have survived and suffered alongside their volatile neighbors. As our own mountains rumble and growl from deep within, now is the time to ask: what will we do when our Sleeping Giants Wake?

The Cascades are actually a chain of volcanoes part of the infamous Ring of Fire that encircles the Pacific Rim. When Mt. St. Helen's erupted, the Pacific Northwest experienced first hand the staggering power that loomed over them...could it happen again?

  • It's a shame to see Japan lose anymore habitable land. They already have a lack of land to begin with and also one of the largest population densities in the world. So to have volcanoes eating any of that land up it probably takes a serious toll on their nation. And it's kind of dumb seeing how in the U.S. we build next to these things considering the fact that we have so many areas a person could live where they wouldn't have to worry about such things. Japan does it because they basically have to. We do it for dumb reasons.

God is, then mother nature itself... because when volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and any other natural disasters strikes mankind can't tell them what to do, they just come and takes lives away from humanity and humanity can't kill them like they are killing humans.... this is why you must respect these things and don't interfere with them.... they are killers who cannot be defeated are killed by humanity....so humans must stop fooling themselves by saying that they are the rulers of the earth when they are weak.... volcanoes are powerful and humans are not...so don't put yourself at risk, because your body and life is just like piece of butter on a hot fire side when it comes to a volcano eruption that comes with a pyroclastic flow, or lava flow....I'm nemesis prime the one with wisdom and knowledge beyond human reached...so i does speak what i know is facts and true.

  • The more I watch doco's like this one, the more happy I am to live in Minnesota. No earthquakes, no tsunamis, no volcanoes, very few tornadoes. Wet enough that forest fires are rare, too flat for mudslides. The only geological impact here was the glaciers from millennia ago that left the great lakes and the many thousands of lakes dotting the state. Prime breeding ground for the mosquitoes that we bitch about. Occasionally we hit -40 degrees F in winter, but I'll take that any day over being buried under a 40 foot high wall of mud, thank you.

  • They talk about only the bigger of the volcano's. Rainier, Hood, Shasta, Lassen. But little do people understand that the entire west coast is one massive chain of volcano's. All equally and capable of great devastation. Lassen National Volcanic park has 36 active volcanoes in its region alone . All of which can erupt and cause significant damage and problems.Any of which can cause a chain event of other eruptions of other volcano's. The majority of peaks and mountains you see in the entire west coast are actually either ancient volcano's or at least dormant ones lying in wait. Most are so old that one can barely tell they have volcanic origins. And they are just just so old since their last eruptions or activities that they show no signs but my just a visible glance that they have or have had a volcanic cone or openings. But we see the flow evidences all around them in lower lying areas.. Not only are these Cascade ranges all volcanoes , but we are now discovering that there are several of them that are actually super volcanoes. And California probable has two or three from lower central California to Northern California going up into Oregon. What is causing these volcanoes is simple to understand. The plate tectonics of the Pacific Plate is pushing into the North American plate. The North American plate is stationary for the most part. It does not move. The Pacific plate is being pushed underneath the the North American plate in what is called a Subduction zone. These areas where it is crashing and being forced under cause a buckling and uprising areas of mountains..these are also weak points from underneath that the magma rises up to the surface to create volcanoes. You look at the entire range of the Cascades from up into Canada all the way down into southern California and realize that all of that is a Subduction zone..as is Yellowstone area. It is all a point where things are being pushed up where these two plates meet and the Pacific plate is moving under the North American plate. If you live anywhere near any of the states of the western portion of the North American continent you probably live not to great a distant from some sort of volcano. Basically from Montana, to Utah and going southward towards Texas most of the mountain regions you will encounter whether big or small are most likely attributed to volcanism. And despite what the USGS (USBS) likes to try to downplay and ignore to the public. These areas are not as quiet and dormant and non active as they want to portray. This is why we see micro quakes, and micro tremors and small tremors in these regions. Always at these ancient and old mountains and peaked areas...deep within them that are actually old and ancient volcanoes. They may never erupt any time soon or in the future even. But they are what they are and they still move. They still have those old ancient areas deep within that caused them to form in the first place. Some as old as before ancient ice glaciers carved their surfaces up. But they are for the most part mostly all volcanoes or volcanism related to some degree. I live just a short drive from Shasta and Lassen and all of these majority of other volcano's. I look at some of them every day off in the distance. At their snow covered beauty. . But I am well aware of what all of them are and are capable of. How far their reaches can go. I honestly think these videos downplay these Shield Volcanoes and how deadly they can be. We were lucky with St Helen's. The side of her gave way due to weaknesses in that side of the mountain. But what if it was to be a sudden eruption and cataclysmic event like Mount Mazama that erupted some 7700 years ago? Its blast was heard on the east coast. The debris flew several states in distance .it caused for a time a volcanic winter. Much of the North American Continent was effected for a very very long time. Its clouds reached the jet streams and spread ash all over the planet. In case you do not know where Mount Mazama is located, it is located in Southern Oregon. It goes by a different name now...Crater Lake. That volcanoes lost many thousands of feet of elevation in that blast. Could any of these present day shield volcanoes. .these sleeping giants do the same?? And what if they did?

  • I explore caves. Since 1964. Yes, I get lost but evidently not enough. Found an unexplored cave 5 miles from an active volcano caldera. Since 2003 its been on my 'To Do' list. After the discovery I decided to save it for my senior citizen recreation needs. I retired after 2010. But felt active enough to do other things. Joined organized caving groups in Michigan, California, and just this month in Wyoming. Did start refurbishing a rain forest trail first completed in 2004. Have a nice view upwards of 10,000 feet to enjoy on rest breaks. Watching avalanches and vented steam. While the mountain that contains the cave has been previously scalded clean of life and blasted with volcanic material the cave survived. As do others. Such as Ape Cave located on the south slope of Mount Saint Helens. I was in it 12 years after that volcano exploded and saw no damage. Let me thank KSPS Public TV & PBS for being honest about science. To get dishonesty about science I look no further than Republicans.
