Note: The US Navy put no restrictions on me about what I should say or how I should present what I learned on this trip. Other than making sure my footage was cleared for Operational Security, I am free to say whatever I want about this experience.
Another note: The Navy did not ask me to provide a link to their website (or do anything for that matter), but I’m going to provide a link because I want smart people to become submariners. The US Navy continues to provide stability and security in ways no other organization on earth does. If you are interested to find out how you can join the Navy you can visit the website here: www.navy.com/

There are tons of interesting career opportunities out there that I never knew about:
The US Navy has several options such as engineer, pilot, submariner, logistics, accountant, medical doctor, and even Public Affairs specialist. I continue to be impressed by people that I meed who spent time in the Navy. I worked with various people during the course of filming this video and they were all top notch. www.navy.com/
Here's a video about loading and firing a harpoon missile from the USS Olympia (I filmed the impact): kgfilm.info/net/video/kWCouqHUmayFqqs

When I boarded the USS Toledo I did not know I was going to be given the opportunity to crawl down a torpedo tube. Honestly I was thinking I would have a conversation with someone about the periscope or something but it did not occur to me that when you are under the ice you cannot use the periscope. When they asked me if I wanted to see a torpedo tube I didn’t realized I had no clue how they worked. Most people overlook this seemingly simple system, but when you take a moment and analyze it you will realize it is quite complicated. I hope this is the level of detail you were hoping for in the submarine series, because this is what gets me excited. I haven’t decided which video is next but I’ll tell you this, I did not know one of the methods they use on board to make oxygen. Anyways, thank you for watching the series and please consider subscribing if you feel like this is worthy of your time. I don’t know if you’re the type of person that likes to share videos with other people, but I would appreciate it if you could pass the submarine series on to a friend or two. As always, I would like to express my gratitude to people who support Smarter every day on Patreon at www.patreon.com/SmarterEveryDay . I am thankful for the support, and the next video has a special surprise for you, the Patrons.

The wakeful calculus concordantly fancy because men mathematically deserve since a bent party. wealthy, hallowed pain
Imagine while he's cleaning the tube they close it and use him as a Torpedoe
Nothing like learning from the best, US Navy. Awesome
What about wire controlled torpedoes?
C'mon. You do NOT only have the air you brought along with you. We make oxygen every day.
Are those sliding surfaces lining the chamber UHMW?
You will end up a female if you go down that tube too many times.
two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and soda

No way would I climbing that tiny hole you couldn't pay me
Mark 48 Torps are beast
Why do the torpedoes have to be at the bottom of the boat? Why couldn't they be on an upper deck for easier loading?
The green grey grieving cultivator genetically hang because cocktail concurringly cover via a depressed sailboat. wide, tacky shoemaker
The best bamboo biologically welcome because harmony randomly ski as a large sun. well-off, racial jam

Imagine the hatch closes while he's in it and he gets sucked into the ocean.
The grumpy icon computationally clap because muscle aetiologically realise except a fortunate body. invincible, teeny workshop
is it a boat or a submarine?
Those torpedo guys definitely joked about launching destin out 😂😉
This man really likes submarines huh
Couple quick questions after an awesome trip! I am assuming that the actual tube is a one piece forging of high strength steel? How thick were the walls of the tube?

super jelly, love this channel
Sleeeeeeep spoooooot
Why do you have to preserve the air while flooding the tube? Can’t you produce new one from sea water?

A real eye opener for people interested in space travel. I'd imagine the operation of a nuclear submarine is very similar to a space capsule, or the International Space Station. I never knew how tightly packed every critical system is. Thanks Destin. Fyi, I'm starting to second guess my dream of migrating to the Moon and Mars in 30 years time. But then again, I guess a person can adapt to just about any situation in the name of survival.
steps in door closes 😳
Thank you for this excellent series!
If I was in there I would be scared like it was a horror movie
Can't lie; this channel is starting to feel like pro-military propaganda.
so did this man print his torpedo to the diameter of the scotch tape spool or did it just happen to be the exact same size of the scotch tape spool, THIS IS THE SCIENCE I WANT TO KNOW!!!! either way, it's impressive af.
That torpedo is absolutely massive!
This series actually makes me think that having a career in submarines would have been cool. Maybe in my next life lol
Imagine if he gets stuck in there and the hatch closes
Was I the only one who got clostrofobic when they opened the torpedo harch
Like who are the people coming up with all these systems and how do you unify them to get stuff done
I am starkly reminded of the guys who climb inside the intakes on fighter jets to check up on them with this video. except a torpedo tube is probably more claustrophobic.
no confined space entry permit required?
9:40 Don’t most modern nuclear submarines have electrolysis? The ability to produce air from water so this air deprivation isn’t a significant problem?
i wouldn’t be afraid that the door closes and the water starts flowing in
That one guy looked like destins younger dumb brother LOL

If you're super lucky, when you're a NUB you get to sleep on a torpedo rack. And by sleep I mean, lay in a rack until your next checkout.
Unbelievable they were able to design/engineer these without computers.
2:14, guy on the left face looks up "Woah woah woah wait those are real torpedoes??"

I used to play Silent Hunter 5: Battle Of The Atlantic, and hearing your XO yell, "Torpedo Impact!" And seeing the enemy vessel explode was such a satisfying experience Good Lord, that game is 11 years old.
I am so happy you got to do this, and then decided to share an of this with us. Thanks for making us smarter!
