New shield mound next to Volcano 🌋 Massive oxydation in the valley

  • That should be Sulphur Dioxide gas emissions, which can be hazardous. Only really a worry on non-windy days that would allow the gas to pool in low points or valleys(it's heavier than air) or if you get surrounded by sources of it with no source of fresh air available. A handheld emergency O2 canister would likely be enough to get you to safety.

  • The ‘oxidation’ is solids deposited by the escaping gasses…largely sulfur as you note. The gaseous mix and mineral mix in magma change as the eruption continues & the mantle extraction becomes less ‘local’

  • I can understand building walls to trap the lava flows, however, it can’t be stopped. Wouldn’t it be prudent to also dig a channel for the lava to follow to the sea? It’s just not going to stop any time soon. And we can’t stop nature. But channels might help direct the lava and give us less work in the long run. Bull dozers could carve wide channels that direct the lava to where we would prefer it to go.

  • There are many patches of sulphur on the cooling lava. This is possibly coming from hydrogen sulphide evaporates coming from below the lava crust. This might be an indication that there is liquid lava below. It's difficult to see where the lava flow is going - some is on top but much of it below. Much of this valley may disappear in time at this rate. Stay safe.

Still the amount of heat is dangerous and as we know there is quite a lot of wind there.

Reportedly after years of constant exposure, enough sulfuric acid has formed in the lungs of these sulfur miners-that much of their lung tissue is severely damaged. Many don’t live past their early 30s. This is what I have heard.

  • So more English lessons. So, I don't think 'oxidation' is the proper word for what you are seeing. It would be proper to point to the reddish colored basalt and refer to that as 'oxidation', because what you have there is oxygen binding with the iron in the stone to make rust. We are getting into obscure and technical English terms, but I think the word for the sulfur here is 'deposition.' In the same way that water vapor precipitates and falls as rain, the sulfur gas being emitted by the lava is depositing as sulfur onto the (relatively) cooled surface of the lava. So what you have here is massive sulfur deposition.
